New Washtenaw County prosecutor will stop seeking cash bail

Washtenaw County’s newly elected prosecutor announced Monday that his office will no longer seek cash bail in criminal cases, saying it discriminates against poor people and perpetuates racial inequities in the justice system.

Prosecutor Eli Savit, who was sworn in to office Saturday, says his policy eliminating cash bail is the first of its kind in Michigan. In his first act as the county’s top prosecutor, he joins a smattering of prosecutors across the country who have done away with the long-standing process of asking defendants to pay money to get out of jail and ensure they show up for future court hearings.
